The MOT 3-Year Rule

Your first MOT is due when your car is three years old. After that, you need one every 12 months.

The deadline is your MOT anniversary — the date it was last tested. Let it expire and you are not legal to drive. We see this happen every month. It takes five minutes to check online, so do not leave it to chance.

How to Check Your MOT Due Date

The easiest way is to visit the DVLA website (check-mot.service.gov.uk) and enter your registration. You will see your MOT history and the exact date your certificate expires.

What Happens If Your MOT Expires

Driving without a valid MOT is illegal. You can be fined up to £1,000 and lose your no-claims discount with insurance.
