Squealing vs Grinding — What is the Difference?

A high-pitched squeal when you brake is usually a wear indicator — a small metal tab on your brake pad designed to make noise when the pads get thin.

A grinding sound is more serious. It means your brake pads are worn down to the backing plate and metal is grinding against metal. This damages your brake discs and is unsafe. Stop and call us immediately.

Common Causes of Brake Noise

Worn brake pads are the most common cause. Pads typically last 25,000–50,000 miles depending on your driving. If you brake hard, brake often, or tow, they wear faster.

Other causes include a stone stuck between the pad and disc, or a seized caliper. These are less common but we see them regularly at our Bilston garage.

What We Check and How We Fix It

We measure your brake pad thickness and disc condition. If the pads are near the wear limit, we recommend replacement. If discs are scored or warped, we replace those too so the job lasts.

We do not swap just pads blindly. A full inspection means you get the right fix, not a band-aid that needs doing again in three months.
