Three Types of Start Failure

When your car will not start, there are three main scenarios: no lights or sounds (dead battery), rapid clicking or grinding sounds (weak battery or starter problem), or engine cranks but does not fire (fuel, ignition, or compression issue).

The sound your car makes tells us a lot about what is wrong, so pay attention to it when you call.

Dead Battery — No Lights, No Sounds

If nothing happens when you turn the key — no lights, no clicking, nothing — your battery is probably flat.

This happens if you have left lights on overnight, the battery is getting old (typically over five years), or the alternator is not charging properly. We can test the battery and alternator for you.

Weak Battery or Starter Issue — Clicking or Grinding

If you hear rapid clicking, the battery has enough power to run the lights but not enough to crank the engine. This is usually a weak or failing battery.

If you hear a grinding sound that slows down with each turn of the key, the starter motor is probably failing. Either way, call us and we will diagnose which needs replacing.

Engine Cranks But Does Not Fire

If the engine turns over but does not start, it is usually a fuel, spark plug, or fuel pump issue. We will run a diagnostic scan to narrow it down.
